Schools dispose of more devices at once than almost any other kind of organisation, and the data on them concerns children. A retired one-to-one laptop fleet holds student work, photographs, welfare notes and sometimes medical information, on hundreds of machines leaving the site together.

What a school is actually disposing of
Student device fleets. Hundreds of identical laptops or tablets retired on a refresh cycle, each with cached accounts, local files and browser history belonging to a child.
Staff and administration machines. These hold the more sensitive material — welfare and wellbeing records, assessment data, family contact details and medical notes.
Server room and library equipment. Older file servers, library systems and the backup media nobody has looked at since the last upgrade.
Interactive panels and lab equipment. Classroom displays and specialist lab machines contain storage that is routinely overlooked because they are not thought of as computers.
Why this is different from a normal business
The records concern minors, which raises the stakes on both disposal and documentation. Schools also answer to boards, departments and parents, any of whom may reasonably ask how retired devices were handled. A certificate of erasure per device — make, model, serial, standard, verification — is the answer to that question.
Timing around terms
Fleet refreshes belong in the holidays. We schedule collections for pupil-free periods so that several hundred devices can be processed without disrupting classes or leaving students without equipment mid-term.
Secure data destruction
Drives are wiped to DoD 5220.22-M by default, with NIST 800-88 and the Australian ISM available where a department specifies. SSDs use firmware-level Secure Erase. Full detail on our e-waste removal and data destruction page.

Can you handle several hundred devices at once?
Yes. Fleet retirements are planned as a staged collection across the holiday period rather than a single visit, so the site is not disrupted.
Do we get documentation for each device?
Yes, where you want it. For student devices a certificate per asset is usually worth having, because it is what answers a question from a department, a board or a parent.
What about the interactive panels in classrooms?
They contain storage and are among the most commonly missed items in a school refresh. We include them if you tell us they are going.
