Kinsoft provides secure e-waste removal and certified data destruction for Sydney businesses. When servers, laptops, and desktops reach end of life, the data on them remains a liability until it is properly destroyed. We collect your hardware, wipe every drive to a recognised international standard, and — where required — issue a certificate of erasure documenting every asset we’ve processed.

Whether you’re refreshing ten laptops or decommissioning an entire server room, our process is the same: secure collection, verified erasure, responsible recycling, and full documentation.

What We Collect

  • Servers — rack-mounted, tower, and blade servers of any brand or age
  • Laptops and notebooks — all brands, working or not
  • Desktop computers — including all-in-ones and workstations
  • Hard drives and SSDs — standalone drives from storage arrays or NAS devices
  • Mobile devices — phones and tablets (factory reset + wipe)

Our Data Destruction Process

Every storage device we collect goes through a multi-step erasure process before the hardware leaves our custody:

  1. Asset logging — we record the make, model, and serial number of every device
  2. Drive identification — HDDs, SSDs, and NVMe drives are identified and treated with the appropriate erasure method
  3. Certified erasure — drives are wiped using your chosen standard (default: US DoD 5220.22-M)
  4. Verification pass — the erasure software performs a final read pass to confirm data cannot be recovered
  5. Certificate issuance — a certificate of erasure is generated per asset on request
  6. Responsible recycling — hardware is processed through certified e-waste recyclers; nothing goes to landfill

Default Erasure Standard: US DoD 5220.22-M

Our default standard is US DoD 5220.22-M, used by the United States Department of Defense for classified media sanitisation. The process makes three passes over every sector: first writing zeros (0x00), then ones (0xFF), then random characters — followed by a final verification pass. This three-pass approach exceeds the requirements of most Australian industry and government data handling policies.

We also support a wide range of alternative standards including NIST 800-88, Australian ISM-6.2.93, Peter Gutmann (35 passes), Bruce Schneier, British HMG IS5 Enhanced, and more. If your industry or regulator specifies a particular standard, we can accommodate it — just let us know when booking.

Certificate of Erasure

A certificate of erasure provides written proof that a specific device has been securely wiped. Each certificate includes:

  • Asset description (make, model, serial number)
  • Erasure standard used
  • Number of passes completed
  • Date and time of erasure
  • Verification result
  • Technician details

Certificates are available for an additional fee per device and are particularly valuable for businesses in regulated industries — legal, medical, financial services, and government — where demonstrating due diligence around data disposal is a compliance requirement.

Who Needs Secure E-Waste Removal?

Under Australia’s Privacy Act 1988, organisations that hold personal information have an obligation to take reasonable steps to destroy or de-identify that information when it is no longer needed. Disposing of hardware without proper data destruction is a potential notifiable data breach. Industries with the highest exposure include:

  • Legal practices — client files, privileged communications, and matter records
  • Medical and allied health — patient records, referrals, imaging, and clinical notes
  • Accounting and financial services — tax records, financial statements, and client data
  • Government and councils — classified and sensitive government information
  • Schools and education — student records and staff personal information
  • Any business replacing hardware — even non-regulated businesses carry risk if customer or employee data is accessible on disposed devices

Why Choose Kinsoft for E-Waste?

  • Sydney-based — we collect from your premises across Greater Sydney, no shipping required
  • Chain of custody — assets are logged from collection through to destruction; nothing is unaccounted for
  • Multiple standards — 21 supported erasure standards covering government, defence, and industry requirements
  • SSD and NVMe support — Secure Erase (ANSI ATA) for solid-state drives; we don’t just run HDD tools on SSDs
  • Existing IT relationship — if you’re already a managed IT client, e-waste collection can be bundled into your service
  • No landfill — all hardware is processed through certified recyclers in compliance with NSW e-waste regulations

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you come to our office to collect the hardware?

Yes — we collect from your premises across Greater Sydney. For large volumes such as server decommissions we can arrange a scheduled collection at a time that minimises disruption to your business.

Is a certificate of erasure legally required in Australia?

There is no single law mandating a certificate of erasure, but the Privacy Act 1988 requires you to take reasonable steps to destroy personal information. A certificate of erasure is the clearest way to demonstrate compliance if your disposal practices are ever scrutinised. For regulated industries such as health and financial services, it is strongly recommended.

Can you erase drives that are no longer bootable or physically damaged?

For drives that are still readable, our software-based erasure process applies regardless of the operating system state. For physically damaged drives that cannot be read at all, secure physical destruction is the appropriate method — contact us to discuss options.

What happens to the hardware after erasure?

Hardware in working condition may be refurbished and reused. Non-functional devices and components are broken down and processed through certified e-waste recyclers who extract materials responsibly. Nothing goes to general landfill.

Can we use a different erasure standard to DoD 5220.22-M?

Yes — we support 21 international erasure standards. If your organisation, regulator, or client specifies a particular standard, simply advise us when booking and we will apply it. A full list of supported standards is available on our pricing page.
